John Harris: Journey to an Active and Successful Retirement
I’m sitting outside in my house on Diamond Head. It’s a beautiful day and I’m being interviewed for a local Athletic magazine by Kalani. Sitting outside by the pool enjoying the day and the company.
I understand that you just recently purchased this house and are having great success since you retired. How did that happen? Kalani asked.
Two years before I retired I was living with my brother and sister in law and had most of my belongings in my bedroom. I was very much in debt and struggling to get by. Wondering how I was going to be able to retire. I had already been looking for some way to improve my life. I had invested in coaching costing me quite a bit of money. The coaching was good but it did not get me where I wanted to be. I was reading a lot of self help books, listening to podcasts and attending webinars. But I continued to struggle getting nowhere. Then I got an email about the Master Key Experience mastermind. It was a pay if forward offer. Scholarships had been paid by previous participants and it was $1 to join and at week five the group would vote to continue with the pay it forward plan or having the course sold. Our group voted to continue with the pay it forward plan.
The Master Key Experience (MKE) is mindset training which I had read about and watched videos and movies. The difference with MKE is the level of engagement. If you read a book you get action steps to take. I found it very difficult to take those actions steps taken from a book. Instead with MKE you are tasked with readings to do some several times a day. Writing your Definite Major Purpose (DMP) and having it reviewed and revising it until you get the wording right. Along with other things to do along the way. This was a little time consuming but it was being broken down to things being done all day. So everyday several times a day you were reading, saying things out loud, sitting quietly and affirmations etc.
I noticed a change in my attitude and self confidence after several weeks due to the constant good messaging to my subconscious. This was working. By the end of the 6 month class there was a huge change in my outlook on life and my self confidence which led to so much more success in my network marketing business that I never had before. When I retired I was debt free and making more money than I had been making working 40 hours a week. Then I was able to buy this house on Diamond Head. I just love living here. I can’t think of anywhere else in the world I would want to live.
So tell me about you training for an Ironman in Brazil later this year. Kalani said.
Well when I moved to Hawaii I started training with Boca Hawaii. I really knew very little about triathlons. I only really knew that they had the Ironman World Championship in Kona every year. Boca Hawaii was a triathlon group. I started in a swimming clinic and the athletes and coaches were so great that I ended up training with them for the Honolulu Marathon. I then bought a bicycle and started doing triathlons the next year. Because I was now training with coaches and a group of absolutely great athletes I became a much better runner and an okay triathlete. I was lucky to get a lottery spot to race in Kona 2 years in a row. I was not fast but I finished and had a great experience. I then did another 2 Ironman races in Cozumel Mexico and Fortaleza Brazil. It was great racing in both places. The problem was Ironman races are not cheap. Between the cost of the race and traveling it became a little too expensive for me so I had to stop.
Then when I retired and was making enough money and time to be able to travel and not have to worry about every penny I spent and I wanted to race again. It is easier to train for the races now that I am retired and have more time to train and recover from the training. Also living here at Diamond Head I can walk out the door and have a great place to run or ride my bike an its only a 10 minute walk to the beach to swim. It can’t get much easier to train. I absolutely love it.
So will this be your last Ironman? Kalani asked
Not unless my body stop cooperating. As I move up in age it gets a little easier to earn a spot to race in Kona at the Ironman World Championship. I want to race in Kona again earning my spot. Kona is special and I loved racing there with my lottery slots but I would like to actually earn a spot to race there. So my plan is to keep racing until I get to Kona again.
Well that sounds like a pretty good plan. Any last thoughts about your life now?
I am so blessed with everything I have. I had a lot of struggles in my life. There were bad times but I figure that was what I needed to get through to get where I am today. I’m so grateful my family, friends, coaches and everyone else that I met on this journey. It was hard at times but it ended up with me loving my life and very very happy.
